The resolution titled ‘Culture of Peace’ raised by Bangladesh in the United Nations General Assembly has been accepted unanimously. Local time on Thursday, 112 countries co-sponsored the resolution. Ambassador Mohammad Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, moved the resolution on behalf of Bangladesh.

The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations gave this information on Friday (May 3).

The Permanent Mission says the resolution discussed this year carries a special significance. Because this year marks the 25th year of the Declaration of the Culture of Peace and its program. In 1999, during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s first tenure, the UN General Assembly adopted a culture of peace declaration and program. Since then, every year Bangladesh has presented the ‘Culture of Peace’ resolution to the UN General Assembly, which identifies eight specific areas to promote a culture of peace and non-violence, calling on all to take action accordingly.

Besides, Bangladesh has been organizing a high-level forum at the United Nations on ‘Culture of Peace’ since 2012 under the leadership of the President of the General Assembly.

While presenting the proposal, Ambassador Muhith highlighted the continued relevance of a culture of peace in the context of various global challenges. He said, today the world is facing increasing conflicts and disregard for human dignity. The transition from this growing conflict and violence must revive the spirit of harmony and sympathy in the human mind, uphold the spirit of equality and equal dignity of all people, and above all make peace more profitable than war.

This year’s resolution requested the President of the General Assembly to convene a day-long high-level forum to properly observe and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Declaration on Culture of Peace.

Besides, in this resolution, member states of the General Assembly, international and regional organizations of the United Nations, civil society, private sector, various educational institutions and other stakeholders including the media have been invited to observe this anniversary appropriately through education and public awareness expansion.

Referring to Bangladesh’s own experience of war and destruction, Ambassador Muhith said, Bangladesh’s initiative to introduce the concept of a culture of peace in the United Nations is inspired by our own experience. Discrimination, racist intolerance and subjugation force us to engage in a destructive war. That is why we have made the promotion of peace a fundamental principle of our foreign policy.

A general debate on the culture of peace was held in the General Assembly before consideration of the resolution. A large number of member states spoke in it. On this occasion they reiterated their commitment to the declaration of a culture of peace and the implementation of the program in this regard. The delegations noted Bangladesh’s historic leadership in establishing the concept of a culture of peace at the United Nations.
