What does the US report say about Chile?
The annual report of the US State Department on the international human rights situation described the repercussions in our country after the Hamas attack on Israel, where nearly 1,200 people were murdered.
In this context, the report mentioned that the Jewish community reported an increase in anti-Semitic content on social networks.
After this offensive, the report included a message published by the mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue (PC), on his X account about the conflict between Hamas and Israel.
“The people of Palestine have the right to resist. The international community has been silent for years in the face of the genocide and extermination of women and children. Surely, Zionism’s response will be fierce. Solution to the conflict is to end the occupation! “Free Palestine,” wrote the communal chief on October 7, 2023.
“Several subsequent pro-Palestinian protests included anti-Semitic speeches. There were two incidents of graffiti scratches with swastikasone in Conception in March and the other in Temucoin September,” the document stated.
In this sense, the president of the Jewish Community of Chile, Gerardo Gorodischercommented in March that “in Chile there is anti-Semitic hatred “which spreads permanently through social networks, and increases depending on the state of the Palestinian-Israeli situation, which affects the local Jewish community.”

On the other hand, the report addressed complaints from the Mapuche communities in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions. “Mapuche of certain communities were subjected to threats and violenceincluding excessive use of force during police searches,” the report stated.
To which he added: “The Mapuche were also disproportionately subjected to threats, violence and excessive use of force by police in the context of crimes related to drug cultivation and trafficking.”
He also mentioned that indigenous people and their institutions have a limited participation in determinations about their lands, culture and traditions.
Although they stressed that indigenous lands are established, they mentioned the demands of some Mapuche communities regarding the restitution of other lands.
Corruption
Meanwhile, the US report addressed the corruption that exists within Chile’s institutions. At this point what happened in the Agreements Casewhich originated from the investigation of contracts signed in 2022 by $426 million between the Antofagasta Housing Seremi and the foundation Living Democracywhose members had ties to the Democratic Revolution.
In this sense, the document mentioned the links between the representatives of said foundations and government authorities, which would have given rise to diversions of funds for the projects.
“The National Prosecutor’s Office “investigated 53 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) throughout the country to determine whether government officials and political parties had committed crimes of corruption, treasury fraud, nepotism, and misappropriation of public funds,” the document detailed.
