Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas has commented that the greening of Dhaka will be raised to international standards through the extensive tree planting activities that have been undertaken on both banks of the Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Kalungar canals under the project.
On Wednesday (May 8), after laying the foundation stone of the ‘Manda Canal restoration and creation of aesthetic environment’ work near Shapla Bridge in Mugda area, Fazle Noor Tapos told the media, ‘We know that we have not been able to meet the standards of greening or afforestation required for Dhaka city according to international standards. . As part of our project, we will plant around 35,000 trees along the banks of this Manda Canal, through which a beautiful and aesthetic environment will be created in this area. Along with that, the greening and afforestation activities for our city will be accelerated. But by planting these canals (projected Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Khalunagar canals) and along the banks of Adi Buriganga, Inshallah we will be able to rise to the international standard of greening.’
Expressing hope for the visible change of the canals by June next year, the mayor said that the Manda canal is the biggest among the projects that are being implemented with the canals. Then Shyampur, Jirani and Kalungar canals. In that context, the work of restoring Manda Canal and creating an aesthetic environment is starting today. All the works of the project will be started by December. A drastic change will come in June next year as the people of Dhaka will notice a visible change by December. That is how all our consultants, contractors and officials are working. We are hopeful that within the next one year we will be able to bring visual and aesthetic changes (of the canals).
Dhaka South City Corporation has started the implementation of the project to restore Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Kalungar canals and create an aesthetic environment at a cost of about Tk 900 crores. Out of this, 397 crore rupees will be spent on restoration of 8.7 km long Manda canal and creation of aesthetic environment. Manda canal restoration and creation of aesthetic environment includes land development, canal waste and silt removal, construction of bicycle lanes and approach roads, construction of three amphitheatres, construction of exercise shed-fountain-walkway-ghat, construction of 32 pedestrian crossing bridges and 6 vehicular bridges, Construction of sitting benches, construction of children’s play area-food court and coffee shop, construction of RCC retaining wall and slope protection, construction of scenic protection fence and construction of public toilets etc.
Later, Mayor Postgola inaugurated the national crematorium development work.
