“My wife can also come to support us, so for us, watching the Donga Ilbo is a family gathering.”

“‘Dong-A Soft Tennis’ for all ages, a family gathering for us.”

These are the words of Geumo Middle School coach Moon Dong-ho (47), who participated in the 102nd Dong-A Ilbo National Soft Tennis Tournament. Coach Moon’s house is located in Hamchang-eup, Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, within a 15-minute drive from Mungyeong International Soft Tennis Stadium in Gyeongsangbuk-do, where the Dong-A Ilbo Tournament is being held. However, it is not easy for the family to get together because the three daughters, Moon Hye-won (21, Okcheon-gun Office, North Chungcheong Province), Hye-yeon Moon (19, Sunchang-gun Office, Jeollabuk-do), and Hye-in Moon (15, Mungyeong Seo Middle School) are all scattered around and pursuing their careers as soft tennis players. Since players of all ages, from elementary school to general, participate in the Dong-A Ilbogi, the three sisters can see each other in this competition.

Moon Hye-won and Moon Hye-yeon faced each other in the doubles match in the semifinals of the women’s general team event at this tournament. The result was Moon Hye-won’s victory. “Since she started playing soft tennis, she has never beaten her older sister,” Hye-yeon Moon said. “The goal is to beat her sister,” she said. If two older sisters compete, who will the youngest support? “She cheers for her older sister who does better every game,” Moon Hye-in said, laughing.

Moon Hye-won and Moon Hye-yeon are also Moon Hye-in’s seniors at Mungyeong Seo Middle School. Geumo Middle School, where my father worked, was a boys’ school, so all three sisters chose Mungyeong Seo Middle School. And all three sisters were Mungyeong Seo Middle School players and won the Dong-A Ilbo Women’s Middle School Team Championship. Her older sisters do not yet have a record of winning individual competitions, but her youngest, Moon Hye-in, was crowned the women’s central division individual singles champion last year. Hyewon Moon said, “My dream is to one day play the Donga Ilbo final with her younger siblings.”

Kwak Yul (15, Gyeongbuk Bonghwa Middle School), who won the South Central Individual Singles Championship on the 9th, also participated in this year’s competition along with his older brother Kwak Hae-neul (21, Inha University) and younger brother Kwak Gyeom (18, Mungyeong Technical High School). Because the college schedule for this competition ended on the 6th, Kwak Hae-neul was unable to watch his younger brother win on the spot.

In families where siblings are athletes in the same sport, there are many cases where the younger siblings follow the eldest child into sports. Among the Kwak brothers, the younger one was the first to pick up the racket. Kwak Gyeom said, “When I was in elementary school, the soft tennis club coach saw me playing soccer and encouraged me to join, saying, ‘I’m good at sports.’ “His father was a judo player until high school, and he seems to have inherited the athletic gene,” he said. “At first, my mother was very against it, so I learned it secretly. “But he quickly got good results and couldn’t hide his exercise,” he said with a laugh.

Next, the eldest brother, Kwak Hae-neul, who seemed to enjoy his younger brother carrying a racket, started playing soft tennis, and the youngest, Kwak Yul, naturally followed in his older brothers’ footsteps. When her brothers all started exercising, her mother had no choice but to raise her hands. Kwak Gyeom and Kwak Yul said, “My dream is to win the Asian Games gold medal together,” and “Yesterday was Parents’ Day, and I was happy to be able to share the news of our victory.”

However, Kwak Gyeom is not the student with the most sibling soft tennis players at Mungyeong Technical High School. Kwon Soon-pyo (18), a classmate of Kwak Gyeom, has four siblings, including older brother Kwon Soon-gyu (20, Korea National Sport University), younger sister Kwon Yuri (16, Gyeongbuk Culinary Science High School), and younger brother Kwon Soon-hyeon (8, Jeomchon Jungang Elementary School), all participating in this competition.
