Installation of safe streetlights in areas vulnerable to crime, contributing to safe walking for residents

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (CEO Hwang Joo-ho, hereinafter referred to as Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power) and Milal Welfare Foundation (Chairman Hong Jeong-gil) held a safe streetlight lighting ceremony to commemorate the installation of smart pole streetlights in the R2 section of Red Road, Hongdae, Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 9th.

Mapo-gu in Seoul was selected through a national contest for the ‘Safe Street Light Plus Support Project’ last year, and a total of 23 smart pole safe street lights were installed in the Hongdae Red Road area. The installation of street lights has improved the walking safety of nearby residents and is expected to reduce the incidence of crime.

Safe Street Lighting is KHNP’s representative social contribution project to ensure a safe way home for residents in crime-vulnerable areas. Starting with Hongje-dong, Seoul in 2014, KHNP has installed a total of 3,222 safe streetlights in 75 regions across the country from 2015 together with the Milal Welfare Foundation, the project implementation organization, by 2023.

The Safe Street Lighting Plus Support Project, which celebrated its 11th anniversary this year, also supported solar street lights, smart poles, and LED security lights. Solar street lights are brighter than existing street lights, but their brightness is adjusted after midnight so they do not interfere with the growth of surrounding plants and animals, and they have a charging function, so they can operate for up to 7 days even at night or during the rainy season when there is no sun. The smart pole installed for the first time this year is a smart streetlight that combines streetlights with CCTV, emergency bells, video detection sensors, and flashers, and is a smart city infrastructure that improves residents’ safety, convenience, and management efficiency.

Hwang Joo-ho, CEO of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, who attended the day, said, “This year, we installed safe street lights in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, which has the most floating population in Seoul. I am glad that Safe Street Lights can help prevent not only crime but also fatal accidents. “We will continue to pay attention to all crime-prevention vulnerable areas across the country, including Seoul, and carry out social contribution projects,” he said.
