As Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29 this November, it is on the verge of a historic moment. The country views this responsibility not only as a sign of high confidence in the international community, but also as an opportunity to take significant action in the fight against climate change.
As Day.Az reports, this is stated in the article by the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Kenya Sultan Hajiyev, published in the newspaper “The Standard”.
The article notes that the Azerbaijani approach is based on the principle of inclusiveness. COP29 is meant to involve all parties. By ensuring that the views and suggestions of people from different groups are heard, stronger partnerships can be built and more effective results can be achieved in the fight against climate change.
Touching on progress made at COP28, particularly in areas such as finance, adaptation and addressing climate-related loss and damage, the Ambassador stressed that much work remains to be done. While traditional development support is important, it is not sufficient to meet the growing financial needs for climate-related activities.
“It is truly important for the international community to make fundamental changes in its approach and way of thinking to effectively address climate-related challenges. One of the important steps Azerbaijan has taken is declaring 2024 the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World”. This not only underscores our commitment global fight against this problem, but also focuses our attention on strengthening partnerships at the national, regional and international levels,” the ambassador noted.
He added that the COP29 team is actively collaborating with various partners and negotiating teams, recognizing that collective action is critical to success.
“We are committed to bridging the divide between the global South and the global West. COP29 must be a force that enhances efficiency and integration, bringing together countries that have historically had limited connections and partnerships.
An example is the developing partnership between Azerbaijan and Kenya. While our countries have good relations, we recognize the need to further strengthen our cooperation, especially given Kenya’s important role in addressing climate change. That is why COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev met with President Ruto in March at the UN Environment Assembly.
“Events such as COP29 or the recent sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) are important examples of how the world’s nations can collectively coordinate their environmental efforts. Leadership demonstrated through the UN Environment Program (UNEP) in advancing the global environmental agenda is to be commended, and we must continue this momentum. The COP Troika mechanism, which combines the Presidency of COP28, COP29 and COP30, is a very important achievement in ensuring that this momentum continues. mission for Kenya and Azerbaijan. If we want to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, we must accept that a comprehensive approach must be taken to solve such a complex problem,” the Azerbaijani ambassador emphasized in the article.
