With Russian troops returning from the Ukrainian border, President Vladimir Putin’s declaration that “Russia never wants war” has caught everyone’s attention.
It was reported a few months ago that Ukraine would join the NATO alliance against Russia. Outraged by this, Russia has recently been involved in an attempt to invade Ukraine. As a culmination of this, Russia engaged in a military exercise last week, amassing thousands of troops in Ukraine’s neighboring Belarus. In addition, the country stationed millions of troops on the Ukrainian border. This created an environment in which Russia could attack Ukraine at any time.
In this situation, unexpectedly, the Russian military is suddenly withdrawing from the border with Ukraine. Thus the tension of the war there is said to have subsided. International political observers say Russia’s decision to withdraw was prompted by efforts by leaders of Britain, the United States, France and Germany to keep Russia at peace over Ukraine.
Meanwhile, reporters questioned President Vladimir Putin in Moscow over the issue. In response, he said, “Russia certainly does not want war.”
