MODENA. More than one hundred children and some teachers in four schools in the Modena area, other cases in other schools in Emilia-Romagna, such as in Forlì, Rimini and Faenza: they felt ill after eating at their children’s school cherry tomatoessupplied to schools as part of the ‘Fruit and vegetables at school’ project promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture to promote correct eating habits among the little ones.
The first cases emerged yesterday (8 May) in two elementary schools in Modena: after eating cherry tomatoes for a snack, the children felt ill, feeling nausea, vomiting and inflammation. No particularly serious cases: out of a total of 132 children and seven teachers rescued in four schools in the Modena area, the Local Health Authority reports, only two were taken to the emergency room and discharged a few hours later.
However, case reports have increased, so much so that the Emilia-Romagna public health system intervened to suspend the project (which also had other stages dedicated to strawberries and carrots planned in the coming weeks), especially in relation to the consumption of the offending supply of cherry tomatoes , of which half-kilo trays were delivered to each school participating in the project.
I am analyzes are underway on cherry tomato samples who will have to clarify the problem that led to the intoxication. The precautionary suspension of the distribution of cherry tomatoes was also taken immediately by the schools involved who reported the problem to the ministry, also because the symptoms would have appeared with a very short latency compared to consumption (15-30 minutes), characterized by nausea and vomiting associated in some cases with burning of the oral and perioral mucous membranes.
