The event took place in the presence of the Ambassador of Morocco, Souriya Otmani, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Canadian Minister of Defense and Member of Parliament Marie France Lalonde, the director of the Moroccan Cultural Center, Houda Zemmouri, the president of the Canadian Association of Moroccans of Ottawa-Gatineau, Najat Ghannou, and several other personalities from the world of politics and diplomacy.
According to a press release from the Moroccan diplomatic representation, the evening organized at the end of the week under the themes of Moroccan culture, music, arts, gastronomy and fashion, in the prestigious reception room of the Canadian federal parliament, aims to highlight and celebrate 62 years of diplomatic relations and cooperation between the two countries.
In a message to the audience, read on her behalf by Ms. Lalonde, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, recalled that for more than half a century, “the excellent bilateral relations between Canada and Morocco have been supported in particular by common interests, whether in terms of commerce, culture, or the promotion of women’s rights.
“This event constitutes a wonderful opportunity to highlight this remarkable report while celebrating Moroccan culture,” he added, according to the press release.
The Canadian Parliamentary Secretary did not fail to note “the important socio-economic contribution of Canadians of Moroccan origin and their good integration into the host society”, while underlining the “strong” ties which bind parliamentarians of the two countries.
In a speech for the occasion, the Moroccan ambassador indicated that “there was no better way to highlight the friendship and cooperation between Morocco and Canada than by expressing it through culture and Arts”.
And to recall that Morocco, due to its geographical position and its thousand-year-old history, has “always reinforced and nourished the principles and values constantly defended and promoted by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which are peace, coexistence, respect for difference, the rejection of all forms of hatred and extremism, dialogue between religions and civilizations.
On behalf of the Association of Moroccans of Ottawa-Gatineau, Najat Ghannou, notably highlighted the dynamism of the associations of Moroccans residing in Canada and their commitment to contributing to the rapprochement between the two countries.
