Today, Sunday, the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, announced the signing of a memorandum for joint security cooperation with the Syrian side, which included five axes, while the Syrian Minister of Interior, Muhammad Khaled Al-Rahmoun, confirmed that a comprehensive meeting for regional security cooperation will be held in Baghdad on the 22nd of next July.
Al-Shammari said, in a joint press conference with his counterpart, the Syrian Minister of Interior, Muhammad Khaled al-Rahmoun, attended by a correspondent for the (INA): “We met with the Syrian Minister of Interior, and discussed all the items on the agenda, where a memorandum was signed for joint security cooperation between the two countries.” .
Al-Shammari explained, “The agreement included a number of articles related to cooperation in combating drugs, controlling international borders, extraditing wanted persons, and combating organized crime and money laundering,” stressing that “all of these issues will enter into force.”
He added, “The Syrian Minister has a busy program of visiting all the training facilities in the Ministry to review them, as an invitation has been sent to students in Syria to participate in training courses at the Ministry of Interior.”
He pointed out, “There is good intelligence cooperation between Iraq and Syria, and we have joint work in exchanging information,” indicating that “intelligence and security work with the Syrian security services is widely available.”
In a separate context, Al-Shammari stated, “The Ministry has received the security file for 6 governorates, and during this year the city centers in Nineveh, Anbar, and Salah al-Din governorates will be handed over, while Kirkuk Governorate will hand over its security file during the year 2025.”
In addition, Syrian Interior Minister Muhammad Khaled al-Rahmoun said during the conference: “Cooperation was discussed in all fields, especially security, as we suffered from terrorism in our two countries, and there is a criminal phenomenon carried out by gangs that trade in drugs and people, so we signed a memorandum of joint security cooperation.”
He stressed that “previous security cooperation with Iraq in the field of drug control resulted in the dismantling of some networks and the seizure of quantities of narcotic substances,” noting that “a meeting will be held on July 22 in the capital, Baghdad, for broader regional cooperation.”
He pointed out that “Iraq has achieved great achievements in eliminating ISIS criminal gangs,” noting that “there are still ISIS hotspots in Syria that carry out attacks from time to time,” pointing out that “we are determined to eliminate terrorism completely.”
