This is how the celebration of Mother’s Day originated
Mother’s Day is a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood in general. The holiday has several origins, the first of which dates back to ancient Greece, where festivals were held in honor of Rhea, the mother of the Greek gods. It is also linked to “Mothering Sunday”, a day celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent that was dedicated to the mothers of the Church.
In the United States, activist Julia Ward Howe, known for her participation in the fight for women’s rights and peace, proposed the idea of celebrating a day dedicated to peace and motherhood in 1870. However, her proposal did not gain popularity.
It was Anna Jarvis, an American woman, who eventually managed to establish the holiday as we know it today. After her mother died in 1905, Jarvis began a campaign to recognize the importance of mothers and promote the idea of a day dedicated to them. Her persistence paid off when in 1914, United States President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday. Currently, each country celebrates the holiday on different dates, several of them in May. In our country, El Salvador and Chile, the holiday is celebrated on May 10.
