MERANO. Thursday (May 9) was the Europe Day, 74 years after that 9 May 1950 which marked the birth of the European Community, when the specter of a third world war distressed the world. Specter reappeared two years ago with the war in Ukraine after years of relative peace, while young people were shaping their idea of Europe on a series of values often elusive to older generations.
«You always ask us what Europe means to us, but then what do you do with our opinions?», are the words with which the chat begins together with a group of students, some of whom are in the working group made up of five several institutes that allo School Village has planned a series of meetings with a European theme. «I am taking part in this day as a musician and with a virtual ticket in my pocket to travel around this Europe as much as possible», explains Siqi Angelica Liu, a seventeen-year-old of clear Asian origins in her third year of linguistic studies with a French focus who immediately conveys her idea of Europe in perpetual motion.
Music as a means of communication that breaks through any frontier also for her classmate Sofia Negrisolo who: «I have always thought that music is a universal and effective way to communicate what languages struggle to express. I hope that language barriers will stop being a reason for cultural prejudices”, commented the sixteen-year-old. European destinations that today primarily young people visit through social media, nourishing their desire for knowledge in a different way than previous generations.
«I love and want to travel and experience this Europe, a diverse continent of cultures, languages and traditions. I used the verb to live because in my opinion to understand a culture in depth you need to identify with the lifestyle of others, as I hope to do this summer by going to Brighton in England for a month”, the thoughts of Arianna Giarletti, who reached the third linguistic and who will write a blog for Europe Day.
Born in Italy, Moroccan origins, two eyes that pierce every border, for Jannat Aaninich Europe is already in Italy. «I am proud of my Moroccan origins, even if I absolutely do not deny the Italian part which is important to the point of saying that I have found my Europe in Italy, in the place where I live and which I don’t want to leave», Aaninich comments. Curious and passionate about life, Jasmin Sleczka Balsano is instead looking for new experiences to immortalize thanks to photography. A universal tool that young people re-appropriate on social media.
«I am happy to be able to give my contribution to this day by immortalizing moments that will remain. Photography is also an art that explores the complexity of the European identity”, underlines the high school student in her third year. Then there is Aurora Venezia, fourth year in Human Sciences for those who have already crossed Europe through the main door: Brussels. «With the Italian Diplomatic Academy, together with a group of young people from all over Europe, I stayed and visited the community institutions in Brussels. My vote in the next European elections will be more informed”, Aurora’s message.
