Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expects “concrete agreements to ensure the security of Ukraine” from the Munich Security Conference taking place these days. He stated this in a conversation with DW on the sidelines of the conference on Saturday, February 19th.

According to Kuleba, Ukraine and Western countries are now united by “the desire to stop the escalation that the Russian Federation is unwinding.” The subject of discussion at the conference in Munich is both what can be done right now and steps in the medium term, the Ukrainian minister said.

Kuleba expressed confidence that the West would respond to Ukraine’s request for help, however, he did not specify whether specific agreements had already been reached. “I have no doubt that we will receive additional support from partners that we have requested,” he told DW.

The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that he met on the sidelines of the conference with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and took part in a meeting of the G7 foreign ministers.

In addition to Kuleba, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also arrived at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. DW reached out to him on the sidelines to comment on US President Joe Biden’s claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin has allegedly decided to attack Ukraine. However, Zelensky did not answer questions.

Conference against the background of the escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

The current Munich Security Conference is taking place against the backdrop of a new escalation in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. A few months ago, Moscow brought tens of thousands of troops and military equipment to the Ukrainian borders. Kiev and the West see this as a threat of a direct military invasion of Ukraine. Moscow denies the existence of such plans and accuses Western countries of arming Ukraine and carrying out maneuvers near the borders of the Russian Federation.

In recent months, according to the US, Russia has increased the number of troops on the border with Ukraine to 190,000. US President Biden said yesterday that he was confident that Putin had decided to invade Ukrainian territory “next week, in the coming days.”

In addition, in recent days in the Donbass, the situation on the line of contact between Ukrainian troops and militants of the self-proclaimed “DPR” and “LPR” has deteriorated sharply. Kiev and the separatists blame each other for escalating tensions. The militants began to mobilize and evacuate the civilian population to the territory of Russia.
