Lufthansa suspends flights to Ukraine due to escalation in eastern Ukraine

Lufthansa has suspended flights to Kiev from 21 to 28 February. In addition, Austrian Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, suspended flights to Kiev and Odessa from February 20 until the end of the month. The authorities of Germany and Austria also called on the citizens of the country to leave Ukraine.

“Lufthansa is constantly monitoring the situation and will decide on further flights at a later date,” the airline said in a statement.

Also agency AFP reported that Lufthansa is suspending flights to Odessa.

Recall that flights over Ukraine were also suspended by KLM and Norwegian. Also, the world’s largest organizations have stopped insuring aircraft that fly in Ukrainian airspace. This is happening against the backdrop of an escalation in the situation in eastern Ukraine.

The aggravation of the situation in eastern Ukraine began this week. The OSCE records violations of the ceasefire regime, the authorities of the DPR and LPR assure that these are provocations of the Ukrainian army. In Kiev, they stated that they had no plans to conduct an offensive operation in the Donbass. Against this background, the DPR and LPR began the evacuation of residents of the self-proclaimed republics and announced a general military mobilization. Refugees from Donbass arrive on the territory of the Rostov region, according to the authorities, the region is ready to accept up to 900 thousand residents of the unrecognized republics. Also, a number of other regions of Russia said they were ready to accept some of the refugees.
