After 14 years in power, the British Conservatives, or Tories, face a major defeat in today’s parliamentary elections. The results of the sociological polls show that the Labor Party, which has been in opposition until now, will win an impressive victory in them, but the usual ruling party will still have to fight to ensure the status of the most important opposition force.

The predictable defeat of conservatives is explained by various circumstances, AP writes. The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, not under the conditions promised by these parties, has played its role Brexit supporters. The party’s inability to find a suitable leader played a role – the accident with Liza Tras, who only lasted 49 days as the head of the government, is a vivid example. Also, the British did not like the government’s actions during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the clearly expressed and realistic support for Ukraine to repel a full-scale Russian invasion. But the main reason why the British are ready to support Labor is the common belief in Western democracies that from time to time another party should come to power.

A hopeless campaign

UK law does not dictate that ordinary general elections should be held in a specific month, let alone a date, recalls Politico.eu. Sky News reports that several circumstances could have prompted the head of government to make such a decision.
