The United States has submitted a resolution to the UN Security Council calling for a temporary ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian radical movement Hamas, as well as opposing the implementation of a major ground operation in Rafah by its ally Israel.
According to “Armenpress”, this was reported by the Reuters agency, citing the text of the resolution at its disposal.
Earlier, the US announced that it would veto the resolution proposed by Algeria, which demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. According to Washington, that resolution could jeopardize ongoing negotiations between the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar aimed at achieving a ceasefire and the release of prisoners held by Hamas.
According to the American text, the UN Security Council should “emphasize its support for the establishment of a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible, which will be based on the release of all hostages and the removal of all obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid on the necessary scale.”
The approval of the resolution requires at least 9 votes in favor, as well as the absence of a veto by the permanent members of the UN Security Council, the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China.
The text of the resolution also emphasizes that given the current conditions, a major ground operation in the city of Rafah on the border with Egypt will further harm civilians and lead to their displacement to neighboring countries.
Israel has announced that it intends to launch an operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million of the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million people have taken refuge.
Reuters notes that so far, Washington has opposed the word “ceasefire” in all UN resolutions on the Israel-Hamas war.
According to Richard Govan, director of the UN International Crisis Group, Israel may be more concerned about the resolution proposed by the US than the one proposed by Algeria.
“The simple fact that the US is presenting this text at all is a warning shot (ed: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) for Netanyahu. It is the strongest signal the US has yet given at the United Nations that Israel cannot rely indefinitely on American diplomatic protection,” Govan said.
