Scientists at the Russian Mechnikov State Medical University have created a new antibiotic based on bacteria that they obtained from strains of microorganisms discovered in Antarctica.

According to scientists, bacteria that develop in extreme conditions, during the process of evolution, acquire unique properties that can be used to obtain medicines for humans.
“During the 63rd Russian Antarctic expedition, on a rocky peak protruding above the ice sheet, researchers discovered strains of bacilli (gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria that produce antimicrobial peptides). These substances regulate the internal processes of bacteria and cells. They also protect against other microorganisms, viruses and microscopic fungi. These peptides damage the shell of pathogens, leading to their death,” Professor Artemy Goncharov, one of the authors of the innovation, told Izvestia.
The professor points out that while studying the properties of the discovered bacteria, scientists were able to isolate promising species. With their participation, researchers were able to create a new drug. The drug contains microorganisms that produce antimicrobial peptides. The advantage of these drugs is their ability to target pathogens that are ineffective with traditional antibiotics.
