Kochi: A chargesheet has been filed in two cases of assault by guest workers of Kitex Company on Christmas day, destruction of public property and assault on police. The 524-page chargesheet was filed in the Kolencherry Judicial Magistrate’s Court. The defendants are all inter-state workers.
There are 175 accused in the case of destroying a police vehicle. There are 51 accused in the case registered following a complaint that Kunnathunadu CI had tried to kill VT Shajan. The total number of accused in the case is 226. The case against them is that they attacked the police officer with the intention of killing him. Defendants have been charged under 11 sections in two FIRs.
Defendants from Assam, UP, Nagaland and Jharkhand are in remand. The riot broke out at around 12pm on Christmas Day in the name of celebrations in a building where other state workers, Kitex employees, were staying. When the police came to know about the clash between the workers, the attackers turned on the police.
Officers had to retreat the police vehicle and attacked the officials. Police arrived at the scene on Sunday morning and attacked and attempted to kill him. A team of police led by Aluva SP Karthik arrived, arrested the accused by force and produced them in court.
