The future of England coach Gareth Southgate remains uncertain following the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Germany.
Southgate’s contract expires at the end of this year and it is not yet clear whether he will remain in charge of the Three Lions at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The English Football Association is reportedly set to renew Southgate’s contract despite the team’s continued failure to win a title since winning the 1966 World Cup.
“There is what suits the team and there is what suits me, a lot of things are taken into consideration,” Southgate said.
Southgate has succeeded in making a corrective revolution in the ranks of the English national team since taking over in 2016, as he led the team to the Euro final twice in a row, in addition to reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Before the start of the Southgate era and since winning the 1966 World Cup, England’s most notable achievements were reaching the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup and the semi-finals of Euro (1996).
