New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to change the name of the film of the same name, adapting the story of Mumbai-based politician Ganguly Kathiawadi from a sex worker.
Ganguly Kathiawadi is from Gujarat. Ganguly takes a young man to Kamathipuram, Mumbai, claiming to love him, sells him and goes into hiding, where he is forced into the sex industry and subjected to many atrocities.
Then there is the introduction of Mumbai’s famous grandfather Kareem Lala. She helped Ganguly and thereby became Ganguly’s famous female benefactor. These are real events from the 60s that are featured in the book The Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
Famous Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has adapted this thread and directed the film under the name Ganguly Kathiyawadi. The film is set to hit screens on Friday. It stars the famous Alia Bhatt as Ganguly.
Many have approached the Mumbai High Court seeking an injunction against the film. The tribunal refused to impose the ban. Ganguly’s adopted son Babu Raviji Shah appealed to the Supreme Court against the verdict.
He mentioned that he was defaming his mother’s name. The apex court, which heard the petition, recommended that the name of the film be changed. Bhansali said the production company’s lawyer had consulted with the petitioner. The case is being re-opened today (February 24).
