The European Championship of university chess teams held in Yerevan on October 7-11 has ended.
RA Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan was present at the awarding ceremony yesterday. We learn about this from the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Summing up the four-day tournament, the RA Minister of Internal Affairs highlighted the importance of the Yerevan championship.
“This was Armenia’s initiative to hold the first European University Chess Championship. Of course, it was an ambitious initiative, considering that we have recently joined the European University Sports Association. But we came up with our offer right away. To our delight, the recommendation was accepted. Chess is one of the characteristics of national pride of Armenia. We must state that the championship took place. The leadership of the European University Sports Federation speaks about it. Our teams are not in the first place, of course I am not satisfied with that point of view, but we have the second prize place – said A. Ashotyan – and added – I am sure that you spent wonderful days in Armenia and made good friends. RA Minister of Education and Culture personally awarded the participants who won the team fight. In the boys’ team competition, the team of the Ural State University of Russia took the first place, the team of the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture of Armenia took the second place, and the team of Warsaw State University of Poland took the third place.
25 university teams from 9 countries took part in the tournament, a total of 82 delegates, 67 of them athletes. The next European Championship of university chess teams will take place in Spain in 2 years.
