Paris just can’t hold the Olympics. After 100 years, even if they organized ‘The Greatest Show of Earth’ in their own city with a big budget, they could not show anything so far. South Sudan’s national anthem was played incorrectly by organizers at a basketball event on Monday. South Sudan played their first match against Puerto Rico. The national anthem is played before the start of the match. That’s where the organizers are. Sudan’s national anthem is played instead of South Sudan’s. The South Sudanese supporters began to boo from the gallery as they understood. Later the organizers corrected their mistakes in a short period of time. After the match, the Olympic Committee apologized to South Sudan in an official statement.
They are seeing the whole issue as ‘human error’. But the South Sudanese players did not take it well. One of the team’s players called the matter ‘disrespectful’ to the media, saying, ‘The organizers needed to be more aware. Especially on such a big stage where South Sudanese players are playing. Playing the wrong national anthem is not at all desirable. It’s kind of disrespectful. No one is 100% perfect. Everyone can make mistakes. But awareness had to be shown.’
In the match, South Sudan beat Puerto Rico by 90-79 points.
