The EU has decided to use parts of the frozen Russian assets for Ukraine. Russia announces reactions.
According to the Kremlin, Russia will react to the transfer of the proceeds from its assets frozen in the EU to Ukraine. There will be no immediate response, but Russia will consider its next steps, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “But of course such steps by the European Commission will not go unanswered.”
The EU Commission had previously released interest income of over 1.5 billion euros from Russia’s assets for the needs of Ukraine for the first time. The money should be used for the defense and reconstruction of the country attacked by Russia, wrote Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
According to the Commission, around 210 billion euros of the Russian central bank’s funds have been frozen in the EU because of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The Brussels-based financial institution Euroclear recently announced that it had collected around 4.4 billion euros in interest in 2023.
