Egypt condemned the attacks on Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, calling them a “dangerous escalation” that could ignite a conflagration in the region.
The country’s Foreign Ministry said the strikes undermine “the intense efforts of Egypt and its partners to end the war in the Gaza Strip” and “indicate Israel’s lack of political will to calm the situation.”
Cairo called on the UN Security Council “to prevent the security situation in the region from getting out of control.”
It should be noted that the Qatari Prime Minister also questioned the seriousness of Israel’s intentions to reach an agreement on the release of hostages after the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
“The political assassinations and continued attacks on civilians in Gaza during negotiations make us ask: How can mediation be successful when one side kills the negotiator on the other side?” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani wrote on the X website. “The world needs serious partners and a global stance against the disregard for human life.”
Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, has acted as a mediator in negotiations between Israel and Hamas throughout the Gaza war. It also hosts Hamas leaders.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant told troops at an Arrow long-range missile defense system battery today that “we do not want war, but we are preparing for all eventualities.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene his security cabinet today, his office said.
The meeting will take place in connection with the liquidations of high-ranking representatives of Hezbollah and Hamas.
Earlier, Cursor wrote that an American official explained how the elimination of Haniyeh would affect negotiations with Hamas.
