MPR Chairman Reminds Regional Heads Not to Be Tempted to Corrupt

MPR Chairman Bambang Soesatyo alias Bamsoet delivered a speech at the 2024 Regional Leader Awards event in Jakarta on Thursday evening, where he expressed appreciation for the event and reminded regional leaders to uphold integrity and resist temptation to engage in corruption.
Bamsoet emphasized the importance of regional leaders serving as positive examples and motivating others to contribute to the welfare of their constituents. He also explicitly reminded them to remain faithful and resist the temptation of corruption, despite the opportunity for personal gain.
The speech came amidst ongoing investigations into corruption involving several regional leaders. According to Bamsoet, since the establishment of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) until 2022, at least 154 district heads or mayors and 22 governors have been implicated in corruption cases.
“One of the root causes of this is the imbalance between the direct election system and the level of political awareness among voters,” Bamsoet stated in a written statement.
He further argued that regional elections have become a transactional arena, where candidates for office often need to spend large sums of money to campaign.
This is the message from MPR Chairman Bambang Soesatyo alias Bamsoet to all regional heads in Indonesia
