Instagram to Block Screenshotting of Temporary Direct Messages
Instagram is working on a new feature that will prevent users from screenshotting temporary direct messages (DMs). This revelation comes from researcher Alexander Paluzzi.
This new feature applies to all messages exchanged in “Disappear Mode” or when the “Show Once” option is enabled for images and videos. “Disappear Mode,” introduced in 2020, allows users to send messages that self-destruct once the recipient leaves the chat.
Currently, Instagram notifies the content creator when a recipient takes a screenshot of these temporary messages. This serves as a deterrent and promotes transparency. However, Instagram is now considering a new feature that would actively block screenshots of temporary DMs.
This move aligns with Instagram’s efforts to reduce the risks associated with unauthorized sharing of private or sensitive content. By preventing screenshots, Instagram aims to protect younger users from potential harm caused by leaked content. While it’s possible for someone to capture a screenshot using an external device, this measure significantly improves the overall security of temporary DMs.
The official release date and availability of this feature have not been announced by Instagram.
