The successful implementation and sustainable operation of the V unit at the Kozloduy NPP using fuel from the American company Westinghouse has opened up the possibility of utilizing the same fuel for the VI unit. This was discussed during a meeting between David Wright, Commissioner at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Bulgarian Energy Minister Rosen Hristov.
It was previously announced that the fuel for block VI is supplied by the French company Framatom, while Westinghouse supplies fuel for block V.
Malinov also revealed that for the first time in the plant’s 50-year history, the fifth unit was loaded with alternative fuel from Westinghouse. He emphasized the positive impact of such initiatives on energy security.
The two parties agreed to continue exchanging expertise and knowledge in the field of nuclear energy. Additionally, Malinov expressed Bulgaria‘s interest in developing technologies for small modular reactors as a flexible option for diversifying energy sources and ensuring energy independence.
The conversation also covered ongoing discussions between Bulgaria and the US regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant at the Kozloduy NPP site. The Energy Minister emphasized the need for swift construction of new nuclear power plants at the site, and expressed confidence in the capabilities of Westinghouse and Hyundai Engineering and Construction for the project.
