Sanatan Followers Block Shahbag Intersection in Dhaka
Followers of the Sanatan religion in Dhaka blocked the Shahbag intersection on August 9 to protest the burning of homes and attacks on temples. They are demanding the formation of a minority ministry, a protection commission, stricter laws to prevent attacks, and 10% of parliamentary seats reserved for minorities.
The protest began at around 3:30 pm on Friday and was scheduled to continue on Saturday at 3 pm. Traffic in the area was blocked due to the demonstration, but it was able to flow smoothly as traffic controllers rerouted vehicles.
The protests erupted following widespread violence across the country after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5. Reports of damage to Hindu homes, institutions, and temples have emerged in various locations.
Bhakta Sangh Bangladesh president Shanti Ranjan Mondal expressed concern over the vandalism of Hindu homes, temples, and businesses, calling for increased security and the safe return of displaced people.
