(24 News) 8 people were killed by a landslide in the capital of Uganda, while 14 people were rescued during the operation.
Eight people were killed in a landslide at a landfill in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, city officials said. Foreign media reports stated that the incident occurred after heavy rain late Friday when a section of the landfill collapsed, covering nearby houses. The Kampala Capital City Authority reported that government and Red Cross officials were searching the scene and rescued 14 people during the operation. Their website stated that eight people had been found dead so far, including six adults and two children, with the rescue operation still ongoing.
The landfill, known as Kitezi, has served as Kampala’s only garbage dump for decades and has become a towering hill. Residents have long complained about its dangers, citing environmental pollution and safety concerns. Footage showed people walking over a section of the landfill that had crushed parts of a house.
