Colombia’s Flor Denis Ruiz, the bearer of the national flag in the Paris Olympics, played the final in the javelin throw and despite a strong start, finished in fifth place.
The athlete, who was born in Pradera, Valle del Cauca, threw 60.49 meters in the first round, placing her seventh in the final and securing her place among the pre-qualification zone.
In the second throw, Colombia improved her distance to 63.00 meters, which ranked her second best, behind Haruka Kitaguchi from China, who achieved 65.80 meters.
In the third round, Ruiz remained in contention for a medal, but her distance dropped to 62.41 meters.
Several other competitors performed better in the final, and Colombia ultimately finished in fifth place, behind China’s Kitaguchi, South Africa’s Jo-An van Dyk, the Czech Republic’s Nikola Ogrodniková, and Croatia’s Sara Kolav.
In the fourth throw, Ruiz protected her right elbow and managed to achieve 61.68 meters, but her hopes of a podium finish dwindled.
Her performance continued to decline in the fifth and final rounds, ending with a distance of 60.14 meters.
Despite her fifth-place finish, Ruiz secured an Olympic Diploma, the 13th for Colombia.
The gold medal went to Kitaguchi with 65.80 meters, while the silver went to van Dyk and the bronze went to Ogrodníková.
Croatia’s Kolav finished fourth with a record-breaking 63.40 meters, and Colombia ended the competition in fifth place with 63.00 meters.
