Before the wheat harvest, an unnecessary order to import wheat from foreign countries severely impacted the country’s economy.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman addressed the farmers’ convention in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He highlighted the 70-year friendship between Pakistan and China, emphasizing that China had made Pakistan a gateway for global trade. He expressed concern over Western countries’ attempts to disrupt these economic relations.
Rehman argued that the reliance on foreign wheat imports, despite ample domestic production, was detrimental to the economy. He criticized the government’s decision to prioritize non-standard wheat, claiming that this action was severely impacting agricultural prices. He expressed his belief that the current economic situation was unsustainable and that the incoming government would be unable to address it.
The cleric also criticized the Prime Minister’s failed attempts to restore economic relations with China. He claimed that China had expressed concerns about Pakistan’s political instability and advised the government to address the issue before seeking reconciliation. Rehman alleged that neither the Prime Minister nor the army chief had been able to resolve the situation.
He further warned that Islam and Muslims would not be allowed to thrive under the current government. He promised that Muslims would resist any attempt to undermine their faith or institutions. He referenced the American occupation of Afghanistan and their subsequent withdrawal, suggesting that Pakistan would not hesitate to confront any foreign interference.
