Venezuela: Chavista Groups Mark Houses of Protesters After Election
Caracas, Venezuela – Tensions remain high in Venezuela following the contentious presidential election on July 30th. Despite Nicolás Maduro claiming victory, the international community has rejected the results citing fraud. In response, chavista groups have resorted to intimidation, marking the houses of those who protested the election.
The houses marked belong to members of “La Roca”, a prominent Bolivarian movement. Residents received threats and had X’s spray-painted on their homes. This act of intimidation is seen as a desperate attempt by the government to suppress dissent and uphold Maduro’s disputed victory.
Supreme Court to Review Election Results
The Supreme Court of Justice announced it will begin an expert opinion on the election results at the request of President Maduro. However, this process has been criticized by foreign observers who doubt the independence of the court.
The court has not yet announced when the evaluation phase of the review will be completed.
International Pressure and Contested Results
The international community has demanded transparency and a recount of the vote, but Maduro has refused to release the official results. The opposition claims that their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, won the election, while the ruling party maintains its victory.
Protests Continue Despite Government Measures
Despite the government’s attempts to suppress dissent, protests and demonstrations against the election results continue in Venezuela. Citizens are expressing their frustration and demanding accountability from the government.
