BOLZANO. Also a delegation of the Cgil of Alto Adige was in Bois du Cazier to remember the miners who died in the tragedy of Marcinelle in Belgium. A delegation of the national Fillea was present with the regional secretary of Bolzano Marco Nardini.
This is one of the biggest workplace tragedies, which occurred onAugust 8, 1956. 68 years after the tragic massacre in the Marcinelle mine in Bois du Cazier, where 100 people lost their lives 262 miners, of which 136 were Italian), Cgil celebrates the anniversary once again to keep alive the memory of one of the greatest workplace tragedies in the world and to promote workplace safety in Europe and the world. A two-day event in which, at the headquarters of the General Federation of Belgian Labour (FGTB) in Charleroi, the topic of security was explored in depth, also through public initiative, “Marcinelle Symbol of Europe. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow“.
The Cgil delegation then took part in the institutional ceremony in front of the mine Cazier Wood. The event was an opportunity to renew the commitment to safety at work and to honor the victims of Marcinelle. “We talked about safety and how today the construction sites of major projects like the Brenner Pass are constantly monitored by Fillea/Cgil to prevent workers from working outside national and territorial regulations,” explains Nardini.
During the visit to the Boys Du Casier mine site, the category realized how terrible the working conditions were at the time, combined with hunger and poverty. “After the commemoration we are even more aware that those who represent the workers, like us at Fillea/Cgil, must do even the impossible so that no worker is ever exploited again”, concludes Nardini in a note.
