President Yoon Seok-yeol nominated Presidential Security Service Director Kim Yong-hyun as his successor to Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik on August 12th. Minister Shin was nominated as Director of the National Security Office, and Director of the National Security Office Jang Ho-jin was nominated as the first special advisor to the government on foreign affairs and security.
Chief of Staff to the President Chung Jin-seok announced these appointments during a briefing held at the Presidential Office in Yongsan on the day.
It is understood that this appointment was planned during President Yoon’s summer vacation. Regarding candidate Kim, it is speculated that he has solidified his position as Minister of National Defense since the beginning of the administration. The appointment of Minister Shin was also reportedly made after careful consideration of his experience as a member of the National Assembly.
Director Chung stated that nominee Kim is an expert in national defense and security, having held various key military positions. His rational and sacrificial leadership style has earned him trust both within and outside the military.
In his nomination speech, candidate Kim emphasized the seriousness of the current domestic and international security situation and pledged to establish a strong security posture to protect the economy and people’s livelihoods. He also addressed the issue of North Korea’s balloon scattering, stating that the government is prioritizing the safety of the people while exploring other effective measures.
Regarding the leak of the blacklist from the intelligence agency, Kim declined to comment, citing ongoing investigations.
The new Chief of Staff, Shin Won-sik, is a three-star general with over 30 years of service. His extensive experience and understanding of current security issues led to his selection for the role.
Additionally, President Yoon appointed a special advisor on foreign affairs and security, nominating Jang Ho-jin, director of the National Security Office, for the position. Jang Ho-jin is an experienced diplomat with expertise in North American relations and other major powers.
Former Constitutional Court Justice Ahn Chang-ho was also nominated as a candidate for the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.
