Expatriate Bangladeshis Protested in the UAE Due to Quota Reform Movement

Expatriate Bangladeshis in the UAE protested the killings surrounding the quota reform movement, facing punishment as a result. The interim government is working to waive their punishment, according to Adviser on Foreign Affairs Touhid Hossain.
Mr. Hossain made this statement during his first briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (August 11). He confirmed that efforts are underway to release those imprisoned in Abu Dhabi for their participation in the anti-discrimination student movement.
The Interim Government’s Focus
The advisor emphasized that the interim government’s primary objective is to create a fair and transparent electoral environment. Additionally, measures are being taken to enhance the quality of services for expatriates.
Previous Protests and Arrests
On July 19, expatriate Bangladeshis gathered in several streets of the emirate in support of the quota reform movement. This resulted in the arrest of some individuals for inciting riots. Subsequently, three Bangladeshis were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 53 received sentences of 10 years and one received 11 years for illegal entry and participation in gatherings.

The government is working to address the concerns of expatriates and ensure their well-being. The chief advisor will address the issue further.
