The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concern over the weekend fire in the cooling tower of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant under the control of the Russian army, which Ukraine blames Russia for causing, while Russia blames the firing by Ukrainian armed forces. However, the IAEA emphasizes that the burning in the cooling tower did not pose a threat to nuclear safety or affect the level of radiation.
A new initiative
Analysts of the US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have found that the Ukrainian operation in the Kursk region of Russia has allowed the Ukrainian armed forces to take the initiative at least temporarily in one area of the front line, countering the initiative of the Russian army in the entire wide area of hostilities. Until now, since November 2023, Russia has determined the course of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, forcing Ukraine to spend a lot of material and human resources on reactive defense operations. However, the ongoing operation of the Ukrainian army in the Kursk region of Russia has forced the Kremlin and the leadership of the Russian armed forces to react by moving armed forces units and military equipment to areas where Ukrainian soldiers have entered.
True, the Russian armed forces have not yet participated in active hostilities in the Kursk region. “Vladimir Putin and Russian military commanders likely mistakenly assumed that Ukraine had no chance of seizing the initiative. However, Ukraine’s ability to achieve operational surprise and threaten Russian operations across the entire front raises questions about Russia’s strategic assumptions that have so far determined its offensive actions on Ukrainian territory. ” ISW analysts write.
