In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car accident. A letter now provides insight into how King Charles III dealt with the death of his ex-wife.
King Charles III and Princess Diana were married for 16 years. Their marriage was followed by a personal estrangement and the tragic death of the 36-year-old. There is still speculation about how her ex-husband was doing at the time. A handwritten letter written by Charles to another mourner, which was auctioned in Boston in 1997, now answers this question.
According to the Daily Mail, the document provides a glimpse into Charles’ soul. He is said to have written the letter to his friend Peter Houghton on December 8, 1997 – just 14 weeks after Diana’s death. Peter had lost his “dear Liz” as a result of a serious illness. And Charles felt emotionally connected to him.
Charles wrote: “My heart bleeds for you as I can well imagine the agony and despair you must have endured during those heartbreaking months knowing about Liz’s illness.” It continued: “I can well imagine the unbearable emptiness you must be feeling at this time. The feeling of confusion and disarray that comes with the departure of someone so young from this world.”
The current monarch added that he could imagine the “agony” his friend was going through. Charles said he longed to “wave a magic wand to change the situation.” Struggling with himself and life, the royal looked for an explanation for such tragic deaths. He stated: “I personally believe that there is another dimension beyond this physical one and that we will be amazed to discover it for ourselves when we are called upon to take that journey ourselves.”
King Charles III ended his emotional letter with a biblical quote from Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians: “For now we see through a glass dimly, but then face to face.”
The document was sold to the unknown highest bidder at an auction by the US auction house RR Auction from Boston for around 1,820 euros. A spokesman for the house described the rare find as follows: “Charles was probably particularly upset at the time he wrote the letter. After all, Princess Diana had tragically died just a few months earlier, in August 1997.”
The world-famous princess died on August 31, 1997, at the age of just 36, as a result of a tragic traffic accident in Paris. On September 6, 1997, she was buried in a moving ceremony attended by the entire world.
