The delegation of the Armenian NPP paid an official visit to the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant in order to learn the experience of the Novovoronezh specialists who implemented the world’s first ambitious project to extend the life of the power unit with the ВВЕР-440 reactor.
“During the Soviet years, two power units with the ВВЕР-440 reactor were built at the Armenian NPP. Power unit №1 has been stopped, power unit №2 is currently undergoing modernization work, which will allow to extend the service life until 2026. According to the energy development strategy of Armenia approved by the government, a decision has already been made to extend the operation period of power unit No. 2 by another 10 years, until 2036. Therefore, we want to study the experience of Novovoronezh NPP in this prospective direction, and we are actively working with specialists in the Russian atomic sector to create a project concept,” said Movses Vardanyan, Director of Armenian NPP.
It should be reminded that power unit No. 3 of the Novovoronezh NPP, which is the leader of a number of power units with ВВЕР-440 reactors built in nine European countries, was stopped in December 2016. Its equipment and safety systems were used during the double modernization of power unit #4. The experience of Novovoronezh NPP specialists is in demand at the global level. “A unique project to double the yield point of power plant No. 4 with the ВВЕР-440 reactor was implemented, the concept of which was proposed by the specialists of the Novovoronezh NPP. After modernization, power unit No. 4 began to meet the most modern safety requirements, despite the fact that it was designed in the 60s,” said Vladimir Povarov, director of the Novovoronezh NPP.
Currently, an Armenian-Russian working group is being created by the initiative of Rosatom state corporation, which will include technical specialists of the RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Armenian NPP, Armatom R&I CJSC, Scientific and Technical Center of Nuclear and Radiological Safety, Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee. On the Russian side, the coordination of the working group’s activities is carried out by “Rusatom Service” JSC. Within the framework of the interaction of the members of the group, a concept for extending the period of operation of the Armenian NPP after 2026 will be developed.
