A new species of fish discovered in the Bering Sea

by time news

Russian researchers have discovered and classified a new species of fish – sea slugs. This is reported by the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanology (VNIRO).

The new species lives at a depth of more than 800 meters in the Bering Sea. According to VNIRO, it was found “on the continental slope of the Aleutian Basin in the depth range of 852-862 meters.” It is classified as belonging to the Liparidae family, aka sea slugs. A distinctive feature of fish is the absence of external elements of the skeleton. Their body is soft and gelatinous, which is why they are called sea slugs.

There are up to 32 genera and more than 400 species of such fish. They inhabit mainly temperate and cold sea and ocean waters. The new species is named after the Russian and Soviet ichthyologist Pyotr Yulievich Schmidt.
