Kyiv: Steps have been taken to repatriate those trapped in the Sumi war zone in Ukraine to India. Those trapped in Sumi were instructed to get ready for the journey. Hoster caretakers said they received a message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Russia has said it will ensure the safety of Indians in Ukraine, where Russian troops continue to occupy the country. The Russian ambassador said that humanitarian assistance would be provided and a safe passage would be ensured for Indians in Ukraine.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla had discussed with the Russian and Ukrainian ambassadors in India the possibility of deporting thousands of Indian students, including Malayalees, to the Russian border cities of Harkiv and Sumi in eastern Ukraine. Harshvardhan Shringla had said that all Indians trapped in the capital Kiev had left. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that he would do everything possible to bring back the Indians.
