A report by the Spanish newspaper Atalayar said that Khalifa Haftar is exploiting international attention to the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza to tighten his grip and enhance his influence in Libya.
The report stated that Haftar is trying to re-impose his “clan’s” political and economic control over the country by undermining the Government of National Unity, “which has failed to significantly improve the living conditions of the population since its establishment in 2021,” according to the report.
Atalayar stressed that Haftar and his “clan” were able to expand their economic and military power by obtaining official funding from the Central Bank, part of the oil production, and their control over migration routes and gold mines in southeastern Libya, adding that his “clan’s” control over “profitable” reconstruction projects guaranteed them a share of the profits.
The newspaper confirmed that Haftar took advantage of the political rivalry in Tripoli to increase his influence in the southwest of Libya, where the largest oil fields and important smuggling routes are located.
According to the report, experts believe that Haftar is intensifying his activities with support from Russia and Egypt, while Turkey seems hesitant to confront Haftar for fear that this will affect its relations with Cairo.
The report described Libya as a “time bomb,” suggesting that the situation there is heading toward instability and uncertainty.
