Eva Veruňková Košařová, director of the 37th annual competition of Czech and Slovak feature films, documentaries and television and internet projects, informed about the winners. This year’s event was visited by a record 16,000 people, 500 more than last year.

The feature film From March to May, which premiered at the Karlovy Vary festival and will be shown in theaters on November 28, takes place under the roof of an old village house. A family of five lives there. Parents are slowly aging, children are growing up and it is clear that they will soon go their own way. But then the unchanging rhythm of everyday life enters the unexpected news about the mother’s pregnancy. The thought of a new sibling gradually affects all the residents of the house.

“The film From March to May deeply interested and affected us. For the subtlety and tenderness with which it deals with the everyday life of one family, for the felt understanding of delicate family dynamics, for the courage to draw its viewers into fragile stories and for the art of finding small miracles in them, ” said the jury of the Pilsen festival. The film was made as his debut by Martin Pavol Repka, a native of Bratislava, who studied directing at FAMU in Prague.

The documentary I’m not yet who I want to be tells the story of Libuša Jarcovjáková, today a star of world photography and an unrestrained woman. The jury praised it for its visually stunning and engaging narrative, for its effort to recognize the heroine’s uncompromising work and search for her identity as a woman. The film by director Klára Tasovská, which premiered at the Berlinale at the beginning of the year and later also appeared in Karlovy Vary, will be shown in theaters next Thursday, October 3.

In the serial production category, the fifth part of To se splóvlí, comrades of the series directed by Matěj Chlupaček won as a television and internet project. According to the jury, it tells an entertaining and compelling story combining the historical setting of the Cold War era with supernatural elements. The entire eight-part series can be seen online.

Three Golden Ducats by Mariana Čengel-Solčanská became the best TV and Internet project in the film and miniseries category. It is a fairy tale that honors and celebrates this well-known style of sweet and cheerful storytelling to the Czech audience, but in a contemporary sense, the jury said. This film is also offered by the iVyszílá platform.

Mimo, directed by Piotr Jasiński, takes home the Ice King for the best student short film.

Approximately 1,000 guests and representatives of film delegations came to Pilsen, which represents a year-on-year increase of almost a third. “There were also a record 180 screenings, a total of 110 films,” notes director Eva Veruňková Košařová.

This year, the finale focused a lot on screenings for primary and secondary schools, which were fully occupied, with over 1,500 children coming. “We want to continue this,” says the boss.

More than half of the screenings were sold out. According to them, the organizers succeeded in rejuvenating the festival again. “This was supported by the fact that now there is a very strong emerging generation of young filmmakers who really shoot differently, are not afraid of certain topics, bring things that interest young people, and at the same time are very well received abroad,” thinks Eva Veruňková Košařová. According to her, the young generation considers the festival more and more their own and a place worth visiting.
