A Politico report indicates that despite official statements from the Joe Biden administration, behind-the-scenes discussions in Washington are showing support for Israeli moves to increase military pressure on Hezbollah.
Officials express approval of Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy to shift military efforts from the southern front to the north, which should contribute to a political solution to the conflict.
According to information previously reported by Kursor, Israeli officials say the current military operation in Lebanon is aimed at clearing out Hezbollah positions near the border with Israel. The Axios portal cites senior American officials as saying that the goal of the operation is to eliminate Hezbollah’s presence near the border, which will allow tens of thousands of Israelis who fled their homes due to attacks from Lebanon to return home.
Before the start of this operation, Israel secured the support of the United States, convincing the American leadership of the clarity of its intentions. The Israeli authorities promised that after the destruction of Hezbollah’s infrastructure, their troops would withdraw from Lebanon. One US official said that during 48 hours of high-level talks, Israel presented a plan that would involve the destruction of Hezbollah facilities and a rapid withdrawal of troops.
The Biden administration supported the operation’s strategic goal of preventing the possibility of Hezbollah attacks on Israeli population centers. At the same time, US officials have expressed concern that what began as a limited operation in time and scope could escalate into a longer and larger conflict, as has happened in the past in Lebanon.
In addition, the Biden administration has privately warned Israel that an invasion could increase support for Hezbollah among the Lebanese population. President Biden also emphasized the importance of achieving a truce after the operation ends.
Kursor also reported that an Israeli official made a serious accusation against the United States.
