Before October 7, Naama Giller’s children came and went freely in their village on the Gaza border. He rarely locked the door of his house. He loved his town, its collective celebrations, life in the open air, the joyful buzz of the little ones playing outside.
Now, in the evenings, she limits the lighting to minimum in her home to avoid being targeted during attacks from Gaza. Most of the children who lived in this village, Netiv haAsara, have left. Military patrols and the roar of bombs are the new soundtrack of a sepulchral and Spartan everyday life. “Our village has emptied, it is deserted”, notes Naama Giller.
“I live here, but I live in fear.”
A year ago, raids by Hamas fighters targeted Netiv haAsara and a dozen other villages: buildings were burned, residents killed in their homes, hostages taken to Gaza.
The terrorist attacks of October 7 caused, according to the Israeli authorities, around 1,200 deaths, thousands of displaced people and around 250 hostages.
Most of the most affected villagers have not yet returned home and are staying in hotels or lodges.
