Turkish forensic experts have confirmed through DNA analysis the identity of a murderer whose mortal remains were exhumed by order of the prosecutor’s office, Turkish state television TRT Haber reported.

According to tests carried out at the Istanbul Institute of Forensic Medicine, the remains of Cem Garipoglu, who committed suicide in prison in 2014, are compatible with those of his mother and father.

Garipoglu was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the 2009 murder of his girlfriend Munevver Karabulut, whose body was found decapitated in a dumpster. They were both 17 years old at the time.

The decision to exhume was made in response to a request from the victim’s family due to suspicions that someone other than the girl’s killer rests in the grave. There have even been claims that Karabulut’s death may have been staged, and that he may have been smuggled out of the country.

The murder shocked Turkey not only because of the brutal manner in which it was carried out, but also because of the impression that the young man, a member of a well-known family, had been patronized and that data from the preliminary police investigation had been withheld.
