As Hurricane Milton advances toward Florida, many iPhone users in the state will have the option to stay connected with loved ones, even if the storm disrupts cell service in the region.
Apple’s recently introduced mobile operating system, iOS 18, allows iPhone users to send text messages via satellite, as well as contact emergency services without a Wi-Fi connection. This feature is available on iPhone 14 or newer models equipped with iOS 18.
How to Enable Satellite Messaging
The iPhone 14, 15, and 16 models are capable of connecting to satellites, but iOS 18 is necessary to send text messages, as stated by Apple.
To ensure your phone is up-to-date, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Check which software version your phone is running and upgrade if necessary. Also, make sure iMessages is turned on before entering areas without a cellular signal. To receive messages, the other person must also have iOS 18.
Once you have installed iOS 18, you will be able to send messages and texts without cellular or Wi-Fi service.
How It Works
When outside normal signal range, your phone will prompt you with a message asking if you’d like to use satellite messaging services.
The iPhone will guide you on where to point your device to connect to a satellite. You will need to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon, according to Apple.
While the messaging service is not as fast as using cellular or Wi-Fi, it is functional. Sending a message may take about 30 seconds, as per Apple’s information.
To send or accept a message, open the Messages app, and follow the instructions to align your phone for a connection.
It’s also important to note that you cannot send or receive photos, videos, or audio messages through satellite.
