Two new artificial intelligence features could arrive with the next update.
This includes an AI-powered “browsing assistant” for Safari that could bring Apple’s browser on par with competing apps, and in a post on X (formerly Twitter), developer Nicolás Álvarez said he had discovered references to two features in Apple’s backend code.
The first – Safari Browsing Assistant – looks similar to AI assistants capable of analyzing and summarizing web pages, like Copilot on Microsoft Edge, or Arc Browser.
The second feature spotted by the developer is called Encrypted Visual Search, and it’s already a feature offered by Spotlight, the developer points out, but it’s currently unclear whether iOS 18 will include a more advanced (and secure) version of the Visual Look Up feature that can automatically recognize plants and animal breeds. Alvarez explains that these two features will use the Oblivious HTTP Gateway (a privacy protocol for forwarding encrypted HTTP messages), which will prevent the company from identifying multiple requests as coming from the same IP address. The developer previously predicted that Apple will use the iCloud Private Relay feature, which requires a monthly subscription to iCloud+. Or Apple One.
Apple has not yet revealed details of the alleged artificial intelligence features expected to arrive in the next operating system update for eligible iPhone models.
