“Invisible Hunters”. This is what the mother of Emmy Marivain, who died of leukemia at the age of 11 on March 12, 2022, now speaks of the flowers she handled all her life. Covered with dozens of pesticides, they contaminated the baby during pregnancy. Before leaving, the young woman made her mother promise to fight so that “everyone knows the truth”.
As reported South-westthe Compensation Fund for Pesticide Victims (FIVP) recognized “the causal link between Emmy’s pathology” and “exposure to pesticides during the prenatal period”. The institute offered compensation of 25,000 euros to each of the two parents.
But in doing so, the mother and her lawyer believe that the damage suffered by Emmy is not really taken into consideration. “She told me: Mom, you have to fight, because we have no right to do this to children. We have no right to poison them. So I promised her that I would do everything possible to prove the link between her illness and my work as a florist“, she says. She is therefore asking the Rennes Court of Appeal for compensation for the suffering suffered by Emmy during her illness, but also for his sister, his brother and his grandmother.
The defense lawyer regretted that FIVP was “bound by the witnesses” and was therefore unable to respond to this request. Although there are European regulations that set pesticide limits for fruits and vegetables, this is not the case for flowers. The Phytovictimes association has therefore joined the fight so that “the general public, the public authorities, the elected representatives can become aware of the situation of the florists and families involved”.
