Devotees were shocked when a chariot overturned during the Masi month-long Therota festival near Ulundurpet.

Arulmigu Periyanayaki Angalamman Temple is located in Elavanasurkottai near Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi District. The annual Mayan Loot Festival is held at this temple in the month of February. The festival will be followed by the Masi Therottam. This year’s festival was held on the second day of March last year. Following that, the procession took place today.

Thousands of devotees from more than 50 towns including Elavanasurkottai, Ulundurpettai, Alangiri, Veeramangalam, Sembianmadevi, Pugaipatti and Vellaiyur had gone to the place for the chariot. A special pooja and Deeparathanam was held at 10:30 am after the idol of the goddess was placed and decorated at Thirutheri.

Following this, the devotees grabbed the toad by the rope and shouted for power. The procession started with the shouts of the devotees and came across Pusari Street Shopping Shiva Kovil Street – Salem Primary Health Center Road and on the way to Melappalayam Road it suddenly rained heavily.

At this point the chariot slipped and fell down the street. Priest Sundaram, who was in the chariot, survived with minor injuries. Devotees who were shocked by the chariot fall immediately summoned the JCB machine. Then with the help of the devotees the chariot was lifted again and repaired and taken to the temple.

The incident in which the priest overturned during the flood has caused great shock in the area. Revenue officials, police and Hindu Charities Department officials are investigating the incident.
