In 2025, the Vienna New Year’s concert, which will be broadcast worldwide, will be dedicated to Johann Strauss, born 200 years ago. However, the program also includes the name of a contemporary of the “King of the Waltz”.
Vienna.
For the first time in the 85-year history of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, a female composition will be performed: on January 1, 2025, the world-famous orchestra will not, as usual, play only works from the Strauss composer dynasty, but also Constanze Geiger’s “Ferdinandus Waltz”, as announced by the orchestra. Geiger, who died in 1890 as Baroness von Ruttenstein, worked as a pianist and composer. The artist, married to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was a friend of Johann Strauss.
The birthday of the “Waltz King” will be 200 years old in 2025. That is why this time the majority of the concert program is dedicated to the composer – from the “Demolierer Polka” to the “Danube Waltz”.
However, the audience still has to wait for a woman to conduct the New Year’s Eve concert in Vienna. The Philharmonic has hired Riccardo Muti (83 years old) for the internationally televised event.
The Italian has already worked with the orchestra on more than 500 performances, including six New Year’s concerts. (dpa)
